Ice Cream in a Bag + VIDEO

Ice Cream in a Bag is a fun must-try recipe! Rich and creamy ice cream in just 10-minutes, no ice cream maker required.

Ice Cream in a Bag

So, are you wondering how to make ice cream in a bag? It's as easy as it sounds. You simply put ice and salt in a large freezer bag. And, then you fill a smaller sandwich bag with all of the ingredients.

A little while later, you have ice cream! Kids will enjoy seeing how easy it is to make ice cream. It's an easy way to get them interested in helping in the kitchen.

And, everyone will enjoy eating their ice cream when they're done.

How to make ice cream in a bag

You really only need a few simple ingredients for this recipe. You will need a liquid (milk, cream, or half and half), salt (rock salt or table salt), ice, flavoring, and sugar.

That's all there is to it.

Keep in mind that this recipe makes enough for one person. So, if more than one person wants ice cream, give them each their own bag and let them make their own.

What kind of milk is best?

You can make this ice cream in a bag with whole milk. Or, you can make ice cream in a bag with heavy cream.

You can also try it with a combination of both. The more cream you use, the creamier your ice cream will be.

How does ice cream in a bag work?

So, you will want to take a few minutes to explain to the kids why making ice cream in a bag works.

Basically, the salt lowers the melting point of the ice just like it does when we put salt on the roads in the winter.

But, in order for the ice to melt, it has to pull the heat from somewhere. In this case, it's the cream.

The salt pulls the heat away from the cream to melt and this turns the ice cream and sugar into homemade ice cream.

Does regular salt work for ice cream?

Yes, you can use regular salt to make ice cream. While many recipes call for rock salt, you don't have to have rock salt for this project to work. Or, if you have it, sea salt or Kosher salt will work just as well.

Tips for making homemade ice cream

When you make this recipe, the ice and the salt will be in the outer bag and the ice cream ingredients will be in the inner bag. You want the contents of each bag to remain separate.

Otherwise, you will have ice cream that tastes like salt. So, make sure that you buy the name brand locking freezer and sandwich bags. Generic bags may not seal as tightly and this can allow the ingredients to mix together.

If the kids' hands get cold while making this ice cream, have them wear oven mitts if you can't find their winter gloves in the middle of the summer.

When they're done making the ice cream, they can squeeze it into a bowl. Or, let them eat it straight from the bag to save on clean up.

You can even cut up fresh fruit or toss in a handful of chocolate chips into the bag if you want to.

Chocolate ice cream in a bag

If you prefer to have chocolate ice cream rather than vanilla, that's not a problem at all.

You can simply add two tablespoons of cocoa powder or chocolate milk powder to the ingredients before you put it in the bag.

You will want to use a whisk to make sure it's well blended before you start. Then, proceed with the recipe.

When you're done, you can add chocolate syrup, sprinkles or fresh fruit as toppings and enjoy.

Ice Cream in a Bag

Ice Cream in a Bag is a fun must-try recipe! Rich and creamy ice cream in just 10-Minutes, no ice cream maker required.
prep time: 1Min active time: 9Min total time: 10Min

ingredients:

  • 2/3 cups heavy cream
  • 1/3 whole milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ice
  • 1/4 cup ice cream salt (or kosher)

instructions:

How to make Ice Cream in a Bag

  1. Combine cream, milk, sugar and vanilla in a quart size freezer bag. Press the air out as you seal the bag.
  2. Put that bag into another quart size freezer bag and again, press the air out as you seal the bag. This will help keep the salt from accidentally seeping into the ice cream.
  3. Fill a one-gallon freezer bag halfway with ice and the salt. Place the quart size freezer bag on top of the ice and then add more ice on top.
  4. Now here is where the fun starts. Grab that bag and shake the living tar out of it. It will take about 7-10 minutes to become ice cream and believe me when I tell you the ice gets really cold, so you may want to wear gloves.
  5. When the mixture is frozen and looks like ice cream, remove the quart bags from the large bag of ice and take the inner quart bag out.
  6. You can snip off the corner of the bag or scoop the ice cream out with a scoop. If you feel like it still needs to be frozen you can pop it in the freezer until it is a little firmer.
DONNA'S NOTES
  1. Ice cream is best served immediately.

Ice Cream in a Bag Variations

  1. Chocolate Ice Cream
    2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  2.  Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
1 tablespoon mini chocolate chips, rough chopped
    1/4 teaspoon mint extract
4 drops green food coloring, optional
  3. Strawberry Ice Cream
    1/2 cup chopped fresh strawberries
  4.  Optional Toppings: rainbow sprinkles (jimmies), crushed cookies, fruit, little candies, crushed candy canes, hot fudge, marshmallows, crushed cereal, caramel.

Ice Cream Bread Recipe + VIDEO

This Ice Cream Bread recipe makes a 2-ingredient dessert that your family will love. Make this easy quick bread for any celebration or party!

Ice Cream Bread Recipe

So, how can two ingredients like self-rising flour and softened ice cream turn into bread? Very easily!
The self-rising flour contains all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder.

That's the basis for any quick bread recipe. By adding the softened ice cream, you are adding the dairy, sugar, and flavorings to your recipe.

It's a delicious, moist, light dessert bread that takes on the flavor of whatever type of ice cream you add to it.

ingredient dessert that your family will love Ice Cream Bread Recipe + VIDEO

It's absolutely delicious and can be changed up easily by using different types of ice cream. You can go classic and simple with French vanilla ice cream or wow your guests by making it with strawberry ice cream, or rocky road.

When you choose an ice cream that contains chunks of chocolate and marshmallows or chunks of cherries, those additions will be in every slice of this bread. Yum!

Can I use low-fat ice cream?

No. You cannot substitute low-fat or reduced-sugar ice cream in this ice cream bread recipe.

This is because the fat and sugar in the ice cream are needed for the recipe to turn out properly. The results just won't be the same if you make substitutions.

ingredient dessert that your family will love Ice Cream Bread Recipe + VIDEO

Can I use regular all-purpose flour?

No, all-purpose flour will not work in this recipe. You need to have self-rising flour so that it rises properly. However if you do not have self-rising flour, there is an an easy substitute!

Substitute for Self-Rising Flour

You can substitute all-purpose flour in this quick bread recipe by making a few adjustments.
Self-rising flour is a blend of all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.

If you plan to use all-purpose flour, you’ll need to add 1 tablespoon of baking powder and 3/4 teaspoon salt to it. Then, use all-purpose in place of the self-rising.

Best add-ins for ice cream bread

Half the fun of making this ice cream bread recipe is using different types of ice cream to change the flavor.

But, if what you have on hand is vanilla ice cream and you really want strawberry ice cream bread, you can add sliced strawberries to your batter.

If you want chocolate ice cream bread, you can use chocolate ice cream along with chopped nuts and a handful of chocolate chips.

Just make sure that you do not add things that increase the amount of liquid in the recipe or it may not turn out the same.

So, while chopped apples should work, applesauce will not. Experiment until you find the quick bread flavors your family likes the best.

Making ice cream bread

Making this recipe doesn't get much easier.

  1. Preheat your oven.
  2. Mix the two ingredients in a large bowl. Don't over mix it. Just mix to combine.
  3. Pour it into the bread pan.Smooth the top with a spatula.
  4. Bake. After baking, allow it to cool completely. Then, remove it from the pan and enjoy.

So, if you've been wondering how to make a cake with melted ice cream and flour, you would use the same process. Instead of baking it in a loaf pan, you would bake it in a cake pan.

  • Adjust the baking time based on the size of the pan you use.

You can bake it in a bundt cake pan and call it a cake. Or, bake it in a bread loaf pan and call it bread.

The end result is a simple, delicious dessert that will impress family and friends.

Ice Cream Bread Variations
  • Double Chocolate Ice Cream Bread - Use chocolate ice cream in place of vanilla, add 1/4 cup cocoa powder and 1 cup chopped chocolate chips.
  •  Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Bread - Add 1 cup chocolate chips to the batter.
  • Strawberry Ice Cream Bread - Use strawberry ice cream and mix in 1 cup chopped fresh strawberries.
  • Cookies & Cream Ice Cream Bread - Use cookies and cream ice cream, add 10-15 Oreo cookies, chopped.

Storing and freezing the bread

If you have leftover ice cream bread, you can wrap the leftovers tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store it in the refrigerator for three to five days.

Or, you can slice it and freeze individual pieces of bread in the freezer for up to six months.

Just make sure to place freezer paper between each slice so that they don't stick together.

Quick bread makes a wonderful breakfast or a simple dessert.

So, if you enjoyed this quick bread recipe, try one of these the next time you're in the mood to bake.

When it's hot outside, ice cream is one of our favorite types of desserts.

Equipment

  • 9x5 bread pan - you can use your favorite, just keep in mind that dark pans and glass pans bake hotter so you may want to reduce your oven temperature by 25°F
  • Cooling rack - you can use your removable microwave rack as a cooling rack in a pinch
  • Bread knife - I love a good bread knife. It is one of my essential knives. This one, I have been using for a decade! I also love to slice tomatoes with it.

It just happens to be dairy-free and you control the sweetness. No matter the weather we are always looking for delicious ice cream.

If you're looking for a few new dairy-free ice cream recipes, you might want to try my 3-ingredient chocolate peanut butter ice cream, this chocolate banana ice cream, and my pecan banana ice cream.

They require only a few simple ingredients and each one is completely dairy-free.

Soft serve strawberry banana ice cream

If you want soft serve ice cream, you can eat it right out of the blender. It will be soft and creamy at that point.

However, if you want ice cream that is more frozen, you can place it back in the freezer after processing the ingredients.

There are no preservatives in your ice cream, so it will freeze solid.

Simply remove from the freezer 10 minutes before serving to allow it to soften slightly. It freezes and keeps beautifully!

You can transfer to a freezer-safe container and allow the ice cream to firm up in the freezer for 2 to 3 hours.

Do you need an ice cream maker?
No, you don't need an ice cream maker to make this frozen banana ice cream. This is a simple recipe that you make with your blender or a food processor.

You simply slice up the frozen fruit and add it to a high power blender or a food processor until it becomes creamy and smooth. Then, you freeze the ice cream until it's solid.

If you do not have a high powered blender you may want to cut your bananas into slices and freeze them.

Strawberry banana ice cream variations
The bananas are key to the creamy ice-cream-like texture of this frozen dessert. So, they will need to be in each recipe.

There are many different types of flavor variations you can try. Here are a few suggestions you can try next time you make this.

  • Blueberry and banana
  • Peach and banana
  • Coconut milk with pineapple and banana
  • Nutella and banana

You can see how this frozen banana ice cream has a world of possibilities.

Tips for making strawberry banana ice cream
This is a very simple recipe and it has always come out absolutely delicious every time I make it. But, here are a few tips you can follow to ensure your ice cream has the best possible flavor.

Always start with ripe bananas when you make this. If your bananas aren't ripe, the ice cream won't be sweet enough.

If you notice you have bananas that are ripening too fast for you to enjoy them, just peel them and put them in the freezer to use in the future.

That way when you start craving strawberry banana ice cream, you will have bananas that are already frozen.

Frozen banana ice cream is a wonderful way to use up fruit that is too ripe to eat as is.

If your berries are starting to look old, just put them in a freezer bag in the freezer to use in your next ice cream recipe. No one will be able to tell when the ice cream is finished.

What you will need to make this recipe
  • Mixing BowlI like a variety of mixing bowls and prep bowls and this set has them all.
  • Blender - You can use any blender, but I absolutely love this one! I use it for ice cream, smoothies, soups, my tomato sauce, and naturally this recipe.

Healthy banana ice cream
Unlike traditional ice cream that contains a lot of sugar and heavy cream, this ice cream is a healthy frozen treat. The sugar in this recipe is completely optional.

You can leave it out entirely if you prefer. Or, you can use your favorite sweetener whether that's stevia or honey instead.

It's a much better choice for anyone that is watching their calories or is lactose intolerant. Just keep in mind that bananas are high in sugar on their own.

Strawberry Banana Ice Cream

Strawberry Banana Ice Cream with 2 ingredients and only 5 minutes!

Prep time: 5 MinCook time: 0 Total time: 5 Min

Ingredients

              • 4 large bananas, frozen
              • 4 cups strawberries, frozen
              • 2 tablespoons sugar, optional

                          Instructions

                                1. Place strawberries in a bowl or measuring cup. If your strawberries are not very sweet, sprinkle with sugar and toss to combine.  Place the bowl in the microwave at 30-second intervals until the strawberries soften slightly and the sugar dissolves in the juice (if used).
                                2. Add bananas and strawberry mixture to the blender and blend until they reach the perfect consistency.
                                3. When your ice cream stops moving in the blender, you will want to stop and scrape down the pitcher of the blender and stir a few times, about 2-3 minutes of total blending time.
                                4. Your frozen fruit may separate into tiny frozen chunks before it becomes a fabulous creamy consistency, so be patient.
                                5. Serve and enjoy! You can also transfer to a freezer-safe container and allow ice cream to firm up in the freezer for 2 to 3 hours.

How to Make Frozen Banana Ice Cream

This banana nut ice cream requires only frozen bananas and pecans. It has no dairy or sugar.

If you want an easy homemade dessert recipe, you need to try it today. Best, of all, it takes only a few minutes to make.

Now that summer is here, I have been getting all of my homemade ice cream recipes ready.

I hope you've had a chance to enjoy my strawberry ice cream and my peaches and cream ice cream.

The secret to my delicious frozen banana ice cream recipe is simply bananas.

So, why does this kitchen hack work so well? Normally, when you puree frozen fruit, it just turns into little flakes of frozen fruit.

But, bananas are very high in pectin. And, it's this pectin that helps keep the ice cream creamy and soft.

                                  FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is it called nice cream?

Banana Nice Cream is a delicious and healthy frozen dessert. The treat is dairy free and sugar free because the only ingredient in it is frozen bananas!

Because it mimics real ice cream but is a healthier dessert, it is called Nice Cream.

How long do you have to freeze bananas for nice cream?

To make this frozen dessert recipe, you will need to freeze the bananas for three to four hours.

Don't freeze them on the door because they won't freeze evenly. Instead, place the container toward the back of the freezer.

Can you puree the bananas then freeze?

You will need to start with six frozen bananas. It's important that you freeze them first and then puree.

If you try to puree them first, the consistency will be off and it won't come out properly.

ingredients and no ice cream maker needed Frozen Banana Ice Cream with Pecans

Can nice cream be made without a blender?

Banana Nice Cream can be made in a blender or food processor. I prefer the blender for ease of clean up.

I have also seen it made with a potato masher, but that is a whole lot of work. I would prefer to eat the frozen banana dipped in chocolate, rather than hand mashing frozen bananas.

Is it OK to freeze bananas in their skin?

You can freeze them in their skin but it will make removing the skin much more difficult when you make this recipe.

Instead, remove the peels and place the bananas in a freezer bag to freeze.

That way, when you're ready to make this recipe all you need to do is to take the bag out of the freezer.

ingredients and no ice cream maker needed Frozen Banana Ice Cream with Pecans

Equipment needed to make this recipe
Can I make a larger batch?

Yes, you can double this banana ice cream recipe and make a larger batch. Just make sure that your blender or food processor is large enough to handle all of the ingredients.

Can I refreeze frozen banana ice cream?

Yes. If you take it out to serve it and it starts to get soft, just put it back in the freezer again. It won't affect the flavor or consistency.

Just keep it in the freezer until it returns to the correct consistency.

How long does frozen banana ice cream stay good for?

This recipe will stay good in the freezer in an airtight container for up to a week.

It will still be good after that, but the consistency might be off. Thankfully, it's easy enough to make that you can create a new batch in just a few minutes.

What can I add to this ice cream?

The joy of this recipe is that it needs only two simple ingredients to make it. But, if you want to add more to it, you can certainly do that as well.

Here are a few ideas you might want to try: chocolate chips, chopped strawberries, a dash of cinnamon, or even a spoonful of Nutella or peanut butter.

Want to make other ice cream recipes? I've got plenty of them!

                                    Enjoy!

Frozen Banana Ice Cream with Pecans

Frozen banana ice cream with pecans is the easiest frozen dessert you’ll ever make. Just 2 ingredients and no ice cream maker needed!
Prep time: 5 Minutes Cook time:  Total time: 5 Minutes

                                    Ingredients

                                    • 6 frozen ripe bananas (cut into chunks)
                                    • 1/2 cup toasted pecans, chopped

                                    Instructions

                                    1. Place the banana chunks in a blender or food processor. Blend until the mixture starts to get creamy, scraping down the sides as necessary. Add pecans and pulse until completely combined.
                                    2. Serve immediately with a soft-serve consistency or place in a freezer safe container and freeze to serve later.
                                    3. If you decide to leave it in the freezer, just allow it to sit at room temperature for 10 minutes or so, to soften before serving.
                                    4. Enjoy!
                                    DONNA'S NOTES
                                    1. The more ripe your bananas are the sweeter the nice cream will be.
                                    2. You can cut bananas into coins and freeze flat on a baking sheet for easier blending.
                                    3. If you have whole frozen bananas, you can break them into chunks before blending.

Cake Batter Ice Cream (Cold Stone Copycat)

Cake Batter Ice Cream is an easy recipe, prepped in just 5 minutes. Made with 7 simple ingredients this Cold Stone Copycat recipe is rich and creamy.

I'm getting ready for summertime and stocking up on homemade ice cream recipes. I hope you enjoy my Cake Batter Ice Cream recipe. What is cake batter ice cream?
So, just like the name sounds, Cake Batter Ice Cream is a heavenly creamy ice cream that really takes just like cake batter does. If you loved licking the spoon when your mom made a cake when you were little, this is the homemade ice cream for you.

                                    What flavor is cake batter?
This Cake Batter Ice Cream is a vanilla ice cream with sprinkles so it takes on the flavor of both ingredients. Some birthday cake ice cream recipes use a white cake mix and some use yellow. But, the flavor is typically vanilla with sprinkles.

We tested this recipe with many cake mixes and it was Pillsbury Classic Yellow Moist Supreme cake mix that gave it the Cold Stone Creamery flavor.

Of course, there is no reason why you can't make a chocolate cake batter ice cream recipe by using a box of chocolate cake mix. It's easy to customize the flavor by changing the ingredients.

What you will need to make Cold Stone Cake Batter Ice Cream Copycat
                                    • Mixing Bowl  - I like a variety of mixing bowls and prep bowls and this set has them all.
                                    • Whisk- I have had this set for over 10 years and it is still as good as the day I bought it. With 3 sizes there is a whisk for every job.
                                    •  Rainbow sprinkles

Can I add extra ingredients to the ice cream? Sure, if you like your ice cream full of chunks and pieces, there's no reason why you can't add some extras. Why not try adding chunks of peanut butter cups or mini marshmallows. Or, you can cut up chocolate chip cookies for a cookie dough ice cream.

Fun serving idea Why not change up the colors of the sprinkles for different holidays and events? You can use red and green for Christmas. Use pastel-colored sprinkles for Easter or springtime. Or, use red and blue sprinkles for Independence Day.

Can I make this Cake Batter Ice Cream dairy-free? My Cake Batter Ice Cream recipe uses heavy cream and whole milk. I haven't tried it using dairy-free alternatives.

However, I have heard that it's possible to substitute non-dairy coffee creamer for the heavy cream and use almond or soy milk in place of the whole milk.

You will need to experiment to find out an alternative that works for you.

If you do find a dairy-free alternative to this Cold Stone Creamery copycat, let me know in the comments below.

How long can I store this ice cream? Homemade ice cream is best eaten as soon as it's frozen. Unlike store-bought ice cream, it has no preservatives.

So, this ice cream will be best if you eat it within a few days of making it. But, that doesn't mean you can't store it for longer.

You will want to store it in a shallow freezer container that is airtight. Cover the ice cream carefully with plastic wrap. Press it down over the top of the ice cream.

Then, put the cover of the container over that. This step will help prevent ice crystals from forming on the top of the ice cream.

And, remember to store the ice cream in the back of the freezer. It has the most consistent cold temperature. Never store ice cream on the freezer door.

This can cause it to melt and refreeze which will affect the taste and texture.

                                    Enjoy!
