This classic comfort food recipe is served over noodles for a hearty dinner your family will love.

These Creamy Swedish Meatballs are comfort food at it's finest. You start with homemade meatballs made with a mix of ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, onions, and spices. It's the spices that make these meatballs so different. Nutmeg and allspice are used to give the meatballs a sweet, spicy taste that sets them apart from your classic Italian meatball. To cook the meatballs you pan fry them until they are perfectly browned and cooked through. Then they go into that rich creamy sauce.

Oh that sauce! It's what dreams are made of. This creamy brown sauce is similar to gravy. Beef broth is added to a roux and whisked slowly until it because a smooth sauce. Then you add a bit of Worcestershire to give it some added flavor, and heavy cream to turn it into a luscious, rich, sauce that you're going to want to put on everything. Add your meatballs to it and let them cook in the sauce for a few minutes and you're ready to serve. I suggest serving them over egg noodles or mashed potatoes. Yum!

HELPFUL TIPS TO MAKE CREAMY SWEDISH MEATBALLS:

  • I highly recommend using a mixture of pork and beef for the meatballs but you can substitute with all beef if you prefer.
  • The size of the meatball will affect how long you need to cook it so make sure you test one to ensure they are fully cooked.
  • Don't have beef broth? You can substitute chicken broth in the sauce.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE CREAMY SWEDISH MEATBALLS:

  • Large skillet with a lid- I would suggest at least a 12-inch skillet for this recipe!
  • Whisk - Use a whisk to keep your sauce smooth and creamy.

Creamy Swedish Meatballs

Creamy Swedish Meatballs are a traditional Swedish dish with perfectly browned, flavorful homemade meatballs coated in a rich cream sauce. These are truly the best Swedish Meatballs Ever. Move over IKEA!
prep time: 10 MINScook time: 35 MINStotal time: 45 mins

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces ground pork
  • 8 ounces ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons butter
Sauce
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl combine ground pork, ground beef, onion, egg, salt, pepper, breadcrumbs, nutmeg, allspice, and parsley. Mix the ingredients thoroughly then roll into 1 1/2 inch balls.
  2. Place butter in a large skillet and, working in batches, begin frying the meatballs, cooking them on all sides until they are perfectly browned and cooked through, about 10 minutes.
  3. Once meatballs are cooked set them to the side and begin making your sauce. Add butter to the skillet and once it is melted add the flour whisking quickly and forming a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes or until it begins to turn a golden color.
  4. Slowly add beef broth whisking the whole time to keep it from getting lumpy. Once all of the broth has been added cook for 5-7 minutes or until the sauce begins to thicken.
  5. Add Worcestershire and heavy cream and continue cooking until the sauce is thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  6. Add the meatballs to the sauce and cook them together for about 5 minutes.
  7. Serve over egg noodles or mashed potatoes.

COOK'S NOTES

  1. If your skillet has too many burned bits after you finish cooking the meatballs you can wash it out before starting your sauce.

The standard meatballs that you might put in a spaghetti sauce or a meatball sub are usually made with ground beef. But, a Swedish meatball is made from both pork and beef. And, of course it has a creamy gravy rather than a red sauce when you serve it.

What are the meatballs made out of at IKEA?

The IKEA Swedish Meatball recipe uses a combination of ground beef and ground pork. Along with that, they add onion, breadcrumbs, garlic, eggs, salt, pepper, and milk. And, of course, it is topped with a traditional Swedish Meatball sauce.

You can buy the IKEA Meatball sauce on Amazon. But, the meatballs will need to be purchased directly from the store. Or, you can use my delicious IKEA Meatballs recipe and make them yourself at home.  Now that you can make IKEA meatballs at home, you can serve this recipe as often as you want to.

The IKEA sauce for meatballs is simply a roux that has added cream and soy sauce. It is served alongside or on top of this Ikea Swedish Meatballs recipe.

Equipment needed to make IKEA Swedish Meatballs

  • Meatballer - A meatballer is an easy, mess-free way to make the perfect size Swedish meatballs.
  • Large frying pan - You will need a large frying pan to brown the meatballs in.
  • Lingonberry jam - If you want a traditional taste, you can purchase this jam to go along with your dinner.

Can I freeze these meatballs?

Yes. If you want to make a big batch of these IKEA meatballs and freeze them for another night, you can.

Simply roll out the meatballs and place them on a baking sheet that's been lined with parchment or freezer paper.

Put them in the freezer until they're frozen. Once they're frozen, you can remove them and put them in a freezer bag. This way, they won't stick together when you take them out.

You can keep frozen meatballs in the freezer for 3 to 4 months provided they are stored in a tightly sealed freezer bag. If you want to cook them first, cooked meatballs will stay good in the freezer for up to a year.

Ikea Meatballs

Have you had IKEA Meatballs? If you've ever been to IKEA, chances are you've tried the famous IKEA Swedish Meatballs. They are one of the most popular items on the menu at the IKEA Restaurant. And, now that IKEA has released the official Swedish meatball recipe, you can make them at home!

ingredients:

  • 500 grams (1.1 pounds) ground beef
  • 250 grams (slightly more than ½ pound) ground pork
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic (crushed or minced)
  • 100 grams (3.5 ounces) breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 5 tablespoons of whole milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
Cream Sauce
  • Dash of oil
  • 40 grams (1.4 ounces) butter
  • 40 grams (1.4 ounces) plain flour
  • 150 ml (5 fluid ounces) vegetable stock
  • 150 ml (5 fluid ounces) beef stock
  • 150 ml (5 fluid ounces) thick double cream
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

How to cook IKEA Meatballs

  1. Combine beef and pork mince and mix thoroughly to break up any lumps. Add finely chopped onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg and mix. Add milk and season well with salt and pepper.
  2. Shape mixture into small, round balls. Place on a clean plate, cover and store in the fridge for 2 hours (to help them hold their shape while cooking).
  3. In a frying pan, heat oil on medium heat. When hot, gently add your meatballs and brown on all sides.
  4. When browned, add to an ovenproof dish and cover. Place in a hot oven, 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 180 degrees Celsius, and cook for a further 30 minutes.
  5. Melt the butter in a frying pan. Whisk in the plain flour and continue cooking, stirring continuously for 2 minutes.
  6. Add the vegetable stock and beef stock and continue to stir. Add the thick double cream, soy sauce and Dijon mustard.
  7. Bring to a simmer and allow the sauce to thicken. Continue to stir.
  8. When ready to eat, serve with your favorite potatoes -- either creamy mash or mini new boiled potatoes.

Helpful Tips to make Taco Cheese Stuffed Meatballs:

  • Do not overmix the meat or you can end up with tough meatballs.
  • Use a cookie dough or ice cream scoop to get uniform meatballs.
  • Be sure to fully seal the cheese within the meatballs or all of the cheese will ooze out while broiling.
  • To make extra meatballs to keep in the freezer, double or triple this recipe. Transfer extra meatballs to a rimmed baking sheet and freeze completely. Then transfer frozen meatballs to a ziploc bag or container.
  • This recipe makes a mild flavored taco meatball. If you prefer extra taco flavor, double the amount of taco seasoning.

  • Large mixing bowlYou will need a bowl large enough for the ingredients and your hands.

Taco Cheese Stuffed Meatballs

Taco Cheese Stuffed Meatballs are a fun twist for Taco Tuesdays! This easy meatball recipe is taken to the next level with taco seasoning and colby jack cheese.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 package taco seasoning (or 2 Tablespoons Homemade Seasoning)
  • 6 ounces Colby Jack cheese - cut into cubes

Instructions

  1. Mix beef, bread crumbs, eggs, milk and taco seasoning until just combined. Do not over mix.
  2. Scoop out 4 tablespoons of beef mixture, flatten then place cheese cube into the center. Bring the edges together to form a ball. Ensure that the meatball is completely sealed.
  3. Transfer meatballs to a greased rimmed baking sheet.
  4. Freeze meatballs on baking sheet for 10-15 minutes to firm up.
  5. Raise oven rack to top and preheat broiler on high.
  6. Broil meatballs on high for 10-12 minutes or until cooked through. Some cheese may escape while broiling.

It's always fun serving foods that are a bit unique, and porcupine meatballs certainly fit that bill.
But don't let the name (or the look) fool you. They're just like normal meatballs, but with a surprise inside: a helping of long-grain white rice, which helps give these meatballs their trademark look.

So not only are they fun to serve (and eat!) but each bite also counts as a serving of meat and grains.

Talk about delicious efficiency!

What are classic porcupine meatballs?

This recipe has a pretty unique name, and it's a fitting choice to match the unique look of these meatballs.

Essentially, porcupine meatballs are typical meatballs with rice inside. Uncooked rice is used to form the meatballs, so when they bake and the rice expands, it gives the meatballs a spiny look. So while they make look a little bit odd, fans of beef and rice are bound to love the taste.

You can serve porcupine meatballs however you like, but traditionally, they're baked or served on a bed of simple homemade red sauce.

How to freeze this porcupine meatball recipe:

One of the best things about porcupine meatballs is that they freeze well. And better yet, whether you're freezing them cooked or uncooked, the process is the same:

Place room-temperature meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. (Note: this means that if you've already cooked the meatballs, they should first be cooled to room temperature.)

Transfer the baking sheet to the freezer until meatballs are frozen.

Remove baking sheet from freezer, then move the frozen meatballs to a ziplock bag.

Seal bag and store in the freezer for up to three to four months.

When you're ready to use the meatballs, let them thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Then you can cook or use them like normal.

How do you freeze meatballs?

This really comes down to personal preference, because freezing works just as well for both raw or cooked. If you're having trouble deciding, there are some benefits:

Freezing raw: Since you don't need to wait for cooking or cooling, this method means there's less upfront work. So you can make the meatballs, freeze them, and then move on to something else.

Freezing cooked: While you do have to spend time cooking the meatballs and waiting for them to cool, the cooked meatballs will be tougher and more likely to keep their shape. Plus, if you cook the porcupine meatballs first, you can freeze the sauce right along with the meatballs.

Yes, you totally can (to both questions).

This recipe already makes a decent sized batch of meatballs (about 30), but that might seem a little short for a party or a little big for dinner. I've adjusted the serving size of this recipe multiple times with great results, so feel free to make as many (or as little!) as you need.

What to serve with classic porcupine meatballs

Although they look a tad different, you can treat these meatballs just like you would any "normal" meatball. So when picking foods to accompany them, any of the following classics would be great:

Garlic bread, whether it be cheesy or extra buttery
Steamed or grilled veggies (green beans, zucchini, tomatoes, etc)
Sweet or savory salads
On a bed of your favorite pasta

Easy Porcupine Meatballs are made with ground beef and rice. It's really delicious way to shake up the traditional meatball with a fun twist, these classic porcupine meatballs are laced with tender white rice and cooked on a bed of easy homemade red sauce.

Ingredients

  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 cup water, divided
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup long-grain white rice, uncooked
  • 1/3 cup chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 tablespoon canola oil
  • 1 tablespoon parsley chopped (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together tomato sauce, 1/2 cup water, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce until the sugar has dissolved. Set bowl aside.
  3. In a large bowl, add rice, 1/2 cup water, onion, salt, garlic powder, black pepper, and paprika. Use a spatula to toss the ingredients together until mixed.
  4. Add ground beef and canola oil to rice mixture, then mix thoroughly until beef has broken down and ingredients are incorporated throughout.
  5. Use a spoon to scoop out 1-2 tablespoons of the meat mixture, then roll and mold it into a ball. Place formed meatball in a 9x13 baking dish. Repeat this step until all the meatballs have been formed, spacing each meatball about 1 inch apart.
  6. Pour the prepared red cause over the meatballs. Give the baking dish a gentle shake to distribute the sauce throughout the dish.
  7. Cover baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 30-35 minutes or until meatballs are cooked through.
  8. Serve porcupine meatballs immediately with chopped parsley as garnish (optional).

When I started putting this recipe together my ingredient list was so long and that is never good. Then I realized that if I just put the teriyaki right into the meatballs I can make dinner much simpler AND tastier!

What could be easier? The entire meal comes together in just 30 minutes and is delicious served over steamed vegetables or rice.

These teriyaki meatballs are unlike anything I have ever tasted. They are bursting with flavor and are amazing on their own.

I mean seriously the best ever teriyaki meatballs. But, we are a sauce loving family so I whipped up an amazing teriyaki sauce to go with the meatballs.

It is so simple because the teriyaki sauce is a stand-alone with the garlic, ginger and sesame. So, it really knocks it out of the park.

I added some pineapple juice for added sweetness and then some corn starch to really thicken it up. We devoured the whole thing. So, no matter how you decide to eat them, you are going to love them! Again and again.

  • If you lightly wet your hands the meatballs will form better and crack less.
  • These meatballs are amazingly flavorful without the sauce. If you are cutting back feel free to serve without the sauce. I have really enjoyed the meatballs without the sauce in veggie wraps.

Saucy Teriyaki Meatballs

Saucy Teriyaki Meatballs are bursting with flavor in an easy recipe that comes together with just a few ingredients. The whole family is going to love 'em. Simple recipe, awesome meatballs!

Ingredients

Meatball Ingredients
  • 1 pound lean ground beef (I used 88%)
  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup Soy Vay® Veri Veri Teriyaki Marinade
  • 3 scallions, thinly sliced (about 1/4 cup)
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
Sauce Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup Soy Vay® Veri Teriyaki Marinade
  • 6 ounces pineapple juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • Optional: sesame seeds and additional scallions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Prepare a baking sheet by lining with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine all meatball ingredients. Mix well, do not over mix or you will have tough meatballs.
  3. Using a 1 tablespoon scoop, portion out meat and place on baking sheet.  After all meatballs have been scooped onto tray, roll into balls.
  4. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until light golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Meanwhile in a 10" skillet warm teriyaki sauce over medium heat. Combine pineapple juice and cornstarch in a resealable container. Cover and shake to combine. Add juice mixture to sauce. Whisk to combine. Cook on medium heat until sauce begins to thicken. 
  6. Remove meatballs from oven and transfer to skillet. Toss meatballs in sauce. Serve and enjoy.

DONNA'S NOTES
