Being the foodie that I am, it probably comes as no surprise that my fondest memories are built entirely around food.

I could easily build whole vacations around finding iconic eats to try. In fact, even when I went to Disneyland, I only had eyes for one goal:

To hit every booth, stall, and food cart I could find.

And on one of these trips to the magic kingdom, I found myself standing in front of a little red food cart, ordering what was fabled to be "the best hand dipped corn dogs ever. "

Which, of course, they totally were the best corn dogs I had ever had. Nothing beats that golden brown breading fresh out of the fryer.

So, naturally, once I had returned from the happiest place on earth, I knew I had to find a way to recreate a similar experience at home.

What are Disneyland corn dogs?

Made famous by the Little Red Wagon food cart on Main Street USA in Disneyland, this carnival classic is a must-try for newcomers and a can't-miss for regulars.

The hand dipped breading has a slightly sweet taste and is typically served with mustard, apple slices, and a bag of chips.

Can you freeze homemade corn dogs?

Yes, you totally can!

Once the corn dogs are fried, let them cool to room temperature, then transfer them to a freezer container or bag.

For best quality, corn dogs can be frozen for one to two months. When ready to eat, preheat oven to 350 degrees F and arrange corn dogs on a baking sheet.

If corn dogs are still frozen, bake for 15-18 minutes. If corn dogs have been thawed, bake for 10 minutes.

How long will corn dogs last in the refrigerator?

Once made, corn dogs can be kept in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to four to six days.

How do you make corn dogs?

Step 1 - Make a creamy batter by mixing cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, buttermilk, an egg, honey, and vegetable oil.

Step 2 - Thread hot dogs on sturdy wooden sticks, leaving enough room for a handle at the bottom.

Step 3 - Dip the corn dogs in the batter, coating them all the way to the stick. I've found it's easier (and way less messy) to pour the batter in a drinking glass and then dip the hot dog inside. This way you get a nice even coating of batter without getting any on your fingers.

Step 4 - Drop the hot dog into a large, wide skillet full of hot oil. Let the hot dogs cook until golden brown and puffy. Once ready, use some tongs to transfer the corn dogs to a paper towel-lined plate to drain and cool slightly.

Step 5 - Serve and enjoy!

Helpful Tips to make Disneyland Corn Dogs Copycat:

  • As mentioned above, this recipe requires about two quarts of vegetable oil to get the depth you need for frying corn dogs. But with that much oil, that also begs the question: Once you're done frying, what do you do with it? You can either safely dispose of it or store it for future fried goods.

Disneyland Corn Dogs Copycat

Made famous by the Little Red Wagon food truck, these hand dipped Disneyland corn dogs are iconic for a reason. With a light, puffy breading flavored with a hint of sweetness and fried to a perfect golden brown, you'll be surprised how easy they are to make at home!
prep time: 10 minscook time: 30 minstotal time: 40 mins

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk, plus up to 1-3 tbsp more for consistency
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoon honey
  • 2 quart vegetable oil, divided
  • 10 hot dogs
  • 10 wooden sticks

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Add buttermilk, egg, honey, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil to bowl and whisk until thoroughly combined with the dry ingredients. Set bowl aside and let batter rest 10 minutes.
  3. While batter rests, heat the remaining vegetable oil in a wide, deep skillet up to 350 degrees F (using a candy thermometer helps!)
  4. Thread hot dogs on to wooden popsicle sticks, leaving enough room to hold the bottom of the sticks while also securely keeping the hot dog in place. If needed, use a paper towel to pat the hot dogs dry.
  5. Give the corn dog batter a stir. The batter should be able to thickly coat a spoon while also be fluid enough to slowly drip off. If batter is too thick, add 1 tablespoon of buttermilk and stir, then do another drip test. You can add up to 3 tablespoons of buttermilk to help even out the consistency.
  6. Pour corn dog batter into a tall drinking glass, filling to about 3/4 full. Dip a threaded hot dog into the batter, gently twisting to coat the hot dog up to the stick. Slowly pull hot dog out of the batter, shaking off any excess.
  7. Holding the coated hot dog by the stick, gently drop it into the oil, letting go before the oil touches your fingers. Cook corn dog for 3-5 minutes, using tongs to turn the corn dog as needed. Use tongs to transfer corn dogs to a paper towel-lined plate. Repeat this step until all corn dogs are cooked. To speed things along, fry corn dogs in batches.
  8. Serve corn dogs immediately with condiments of your choice.

Monte Cristo Sandwich - Disneyland Offficial + VIDEO

This Monte Cristo sandwich is my absolute favorite thing to order at Disneyland! Every time we go to Disneyland we make reservations at Cafe Orleans and order the Monte Cristo and the Pomme Frites (which are also available at the Blue Bayou). They have shared their official recipe and it is divine!

We love Disney recipes at home. Check out our Disneyland Corn Dogs and Disney Dole Whip! And their official Churro recipe.

As far back as the 1930s, people have enjoyed the French croque-monsieu or French Sandwich which refers to a fried or grilled ham and cheese sandwich. No matter what you call it, this sandwich will quickly become a favorite.

Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe

The Monte Cristo sandwich gained popularity thanks to Disney who has had this sandwich on its menu for over 50 years. You can enjoy it at the Blue Bayou and Cafe Orleans in Disneyland.

They finally released their official recipe for their version of this sandwich so that people could make it at home.

While it is slightly different than the traditional French Sandwich, it's quickly become a favorite which is why I'm sharing it today.

is my absolute favorite thing to order at Disneyland Monte Cristo Sandwich - Disneyland Offficial + VIDEO

What's the difference between a Monte Cristo and a croque-monsieu?

The Disney version of the Monte Cristo Sandwich is, of course, fried. And, it contains both ham and turkey rather than simply ham.

Traditionally, a Monte Cristo is deep-fried rather than simply fried. And, while the traditional French version contains a French cheese like Gouda or Gruyere, the Disney version contains Swiss cheese.

is my absolute favorite thing to order at Disneyland Monte Cristo Sandwich - Disneyland Offficial + VIDEO

What is the best bread for a Monte Cristo?

That really depends on who you talk to. You can make this sandwich recipe with any type of bread you like.

Disney traditionally uses white bread for their version. A few visits ago I talked to the chef and was told that they use sliced Hawaiian bread and it makes a world of difference in my opinion.

But, for the French version, you would use thick slices of brioche.

If you cannot find that, look for a thick-sliced style of sandwich bread rather than thin. You want something that is thick enough to stand up to deep frying. A challah style bread will work as well.

is my absolute favorite thing to order at Disneyland Monte Cristo Sandwich - Disneyland Offficial + VIDEO

What type of ham should I use?

Any type of ham will work with this Monte Cristo Sandwich recipe, but traditionally baked or boiled ham was most commonly used in this sandwich. We have many more options available now, so feel free to experiment with the type you have at home.

And, if you don't have Swiss cheese on hand, create it with whatever type of sliced cheese you have.

is my absolute favorite thing to order at Disneyland Monte Cristo Sandwich - Disneyland Offficial + VIDEO

Ingredients for a Monte Cristo

You will need these ingredients to make your own sandwich.
  • egg
  • water
  • all-purpose flour
  • salt
  • baking powder
  • egg bread - try sliced Hawaiian bread
  • ham
  • turkey
  • Swiss cheese or Gruyere
  • canola oil for frying
  • Confectioners sugar
  • Blackberry preserves

is my absolute favorite thing to order at Disneyland Monte Cristo Sandwich - Disneyland Offficial + VIDEO

How to Make a Monte Cristo

To make this sandwich, you make a batter of the egg, water, flour, salt, and baking powder. Then, you prepare your sandwiches with bread, ham, turkey, and cheese.

Then, cut your sandwich in quarters. Heat the oil on the stove. Cover the sandwich, front and back, with the batter. And, cook each side until golden brown.

Don't cook more than one sandwich at a time or you will lower the temperature of the oil. This will make your sandwiches heavy and greasy.

Remove the sandwich to dry on paper towels. Then, sprinkle the warm sandwich with confectioners sugar. And, serve it with a small bowl of blackberry preserves to dip it in.

It's traditional to serve this Monte Cristo sandwich with jam.

If you would prefer to bake your Monte Cristo instead of frying it, you can bake it at 450F for 5 minutes per side.

is my absolute favorite thing to order at Disneyland Monte Cristo Sandwich - Disneyland Offficial + VIDEO

What to serve with Monte Cristo sandwiches

If you're wondering what you should serve with your sandwich besides the jam or preserves, you have several options.

You can serve a handful of grapes or fresh strawberries. Or, you can serve it with potato chips. Why not try it with a bowl of fruit salad?

is my absolute favorite thing to order at Disneyland Monte Cristo Sandwich - Disneyland Offficial + VIDEO

How can I store leftovers?

A Monte Cristo sandwich is best served warm. You want the cheese to be all melty when you bite into it.

But, if you happen to have some leftover, you can store it in the refrigerator wrapped in aluminum foil for two days.

To reheat it again, remove it from the foil and reheat it on a cookie sheet in the oven.
