Churros Recipe
This churros recipe makes the most delicious homemade churros I have never had. They are soft and light on the inside with a lightly crispy outside. Lightly coated with cinnamon sugar, they are the ultimate dessert.
If all you have ever had are the frozen and reheated churros, you are in for a definite treat with this churros recipe.
And, if you've been wondering how to make churros that come out light and flaky, the secret is to make them homemade.
What is a churro?
Churros are fried pastries. They are popular in Mexico and Spain and of course in the United States. They may be long and thick. Or, they may be thinner and twisted. They resemble a donut or cruller. And, they are made from an unsweetened dough that is sprinkled with either sugar or cinnamon sugar depending on the recipe.
How to make this churros recipe
While churros may look a bit intimidating, they are relatively easy to make. You will need these pantry staple ingredients.- Water
- Butter
- Salt
- Cinnamon
- All-purpose flour
- Eggs
- Vegetable or canola oil
- Sugar
Since this churros recipe involves squeezing the batter into the hot oil, you will also need a piping bag that has been fitted with a large star tip. That's what gives these churros their distinctive shape.
- You heat the water, butter, salt, and cinnamon in a pan on the stove.
- Then, you whisk in the flour.
- Let it rest and add the eggs, stirring again.
- Then, heat the oil and carefully pipe in the dough.
- Fry them until golden brown and remove them from the oil.
- Drain them on a paper towel and then dust them with cinnamon sugar.
Tips for making the best churros
Here are a few tips to follow when making this churros recipe.- It's very important that the oil is heated to the correct temperature. You can check the temperature using a candy thermometer.
- By using a star piping tip, your churros will have more depth to the star shape. This means that the edges will be crispier. The more closed the star piping tip is, the crispier they will be.
- Be certain that you let the dough rest before you add the eggs. If you add the eggs to warm dough, it may cook the egg. And, you do not want pieces of egg in your churro dough.
- Only fry two to three churros at a time. Adding too many to the oil can lower the temperature.
- Always drain the churros before you add the cinnamon and sugar. If you don't let some of the oil drain off first, they will be greasy.
What do you dip churros in?
Half the fun of eating churros is dipping them. Of course, you don't have to dip them. They are delicious simply dusted with cinnamon and sugar. But, if you do want to dip them, you can try these ideas.
How can I store homemade churros?
When you make this churros recipe, it's best to eat them warm as soon as they're made. But, if you want to save them for a few days, you can. Just place the cooled churros in a plastic bag or a container with a tightly fitting lid. You can keep them at room temperature in this container for up to two days.
If you want to store these churros for longer than two days, you can freeze them. After placing them in a freezer bag and sealing it, you can keep them in the freezer for up to four weeks.
Churros will lose their crunch if they are frozen. So, if you want them to be crunchy when you eat them, enjoy them warm.
You can try heating them up again in the oven to restore some of the crispiness.
Just place them in a layer on a cookie sheet. Then, place them in a warm oven (170°F) for about 30 minutes. This will help restore some of the crunch.
